A's Love in the Afternoon

The A's won 62 of their first 100 games this season, and this afternoon they won the first of their last 62: 13-1 over the visiting Astros. It has been an outstanding season so far; in addition to Oakland's holding the best record in baseball for some time now, somebody gave me this great hat.

The A's lead the American League Western Division by 2.5 games over the idle Angels:

1. Oakland 63-38
2. Los Angeles 60-40, 2.5 games behind
3. Seattle 53-48, 10.0
4. Houston 42-60, 21.5
5. Texas 40-62, 23.5

  1. Oakland trails at Houston, 4-1, going into the top of the ninth. Los Angeles is tied, 6-6, at Baltimore in the bottom of the 11th.

Stephen Vogt of the A's gets an out in Houston, but there are Orioles on first and third in Baltimore.

Derek Norris singles for Oakland, but then the little Oriole dots on base disappear in the MLB.com animation, and we're headed to the top of the 12th in Baltimore, still tied at 6.

Josh Reddick doubles Norris to third, but now the Angels have two runners on in the top of the 12th in Baltimore.

Pinch-hitter Alberto Callaspo singles home Norris and Reddick. The Astros' lead is back to 4-3.

The A's pinch-run Billy Burns (the only rookie to play for Oakland all season, and he's making his second appearance of the season tonight after yesterday's major-league debut) for Callaspo. But he's thrown out at second on John Jaso's grounder. Two out. Still 4-3. But now the Angel runners have disappeared, and we're headed to the bottom of the 12th in Baltimore.

Jaso goes to second on a wild pitch, and then Jed Lowrie walks.

Yoenis Cespedes singles, scoring Jaso and moving Lowrie to second base. TIE GAME! 4-4.

Pitching change in Houston, AND THE ORIOLES BEAT THE ANGELS, 7-6, IN THE 12TH INNING!

Brandon Moss goes full count and then singles home Lowrie! A'S LEAD, 5-4! Another pitching change.

JOSH DONALDSON DOUBLES OFF THE NEW GUY! Moss and Cespedes score! IT'S 7-4! #GREENCOLLAR!

Intentional walk to Vogt, and then Norris grounds out. Headed to bottom of ninth …!
