OVC Update

Big showdown in the OVC East last night, as Eastern Kentucky hosted Belmont on ESPN2.  The Colonels handed the Bruins their first conference loss of the year, winning 74-63 before a great crowd in Richmond.  Meanwhile, the Racers -- who were ranked 255th in the country by Ken Pomeroy when conference play began -- are a sparkling 5-0 against OVC opponents, and that record includes a win at Eastern Kentucky.  As a result of this excellent play, the Racers have moved up 57 spots in the rankings.  And we haven't even mentioned Sean Woods's Morehead State team, which is also off to a good start.  Here are the latest standings (conference games only, with Ken Pomeroy's rankings next to each team):

EASTERN DIVISION:
125.  Belmont:  4-1
166.  Morehead St:  3-1
259.  Tennessee Tech:  3-1
130.  E. Kentucky:  3-2
304.  Jacksonville St:  3-3
324.  Tennessee St:  1-5

WESTERN DIVISION:
198.  Murray St:  5-0
286.  Austin Peay:  2-2
306.  SIU-Edwardsville:  2-3
321.  E. Illinois:  2-4
241.  SE Missouri St:  1-4
313.  UT-Martin:  1-4

  1. I watched a little of the EKU-Belmont game last night. Belmont led at the half by one point. Right before they came back out for the second half, the ESPN commentators went through what they called a "scorecard," in which they talked about how the two teams were doing in various areas of the game. The color commentator was asked which team was ahead on his scorecard. "Belmont, slightly," he said.

Good thing we have the scorecard to crosscheck the scoreboard.
