Take the 1912 Eighth Grade Examination for Schools in Bullitt County

Thanks to Salon for posting this fascinating document from Kentucky history -- an examination given to eighth-graders in Bullitt County in November 1912.  This test appears to have been prepared by people who had great confidence in their ability to determine what an educated person needed to know.

  1. The USA Weekend insert in Sunday's Madisonville Messenger had several anecdotes about teachers and teaching processes. One of those is about a 46-year-old college professor in Los Angeles who has her English 101 students read Mrs. Dalloway and A Room of One's Own. This little story was presented as an example of contemporary teachers who are "re-introducing the classics." I thought that was interesting, in that it felt like Mrs. Dalloway was a book that the edgier lit teachers assigned at WKU in the 1980s.

Well, whatever, let me be clear: I love USA Weekend.
