HP SPECIAL REPORT: The 1942 Heath High School Yearbook Is Online

This just in to the Kentucky desk, who is so excited that it keeps having to go back and correct typos as its fingers trip over one another trying to type this sentence ... the very, very awesome West Kentucky Genealogy Facebook outfit has posted 34 photographs of the 1942 Heath High School yearbook! I hope the--seriously, it's very, very awesome--West Kentucky Genealogy Facebook folk don't mind if we include one here:

The yearbook, which at some point became known as the Pirata, was then known as Heath Review. More in the comments as this rapidly coalescing story warrants ...

  1. The fourth of 34 pictures:

IF IN THE YEARS TO COME, WHEN SCHOOL DAYS ARE BUT A CHERISHED MEMORY, YOU CAN TURN THESE PAGES AND SEE YOURSELF ONCE AGAIN A STUDENT AT HEATH, IF WITH PRIDE YOU CAN TURN TO THE PICTURE OF A PARTICULAR CHUM AND SAY "THERE WAS A FRIEND," IF WITH LOVE AND LOYALTY SURGING IN YOUR HEART ANEW YOU CAN HEAR YOURSELF SINGING "ALMA MATER," WE SHALL FEEL THAT OUR WORK HAS NOT BEEN IN VAIN.

YEARS WILL DIM THE MEMORIES AND SCENES THAT ARE NOW CLEAR. THAT THESE MEMORIES MAY BE KEPT UNFADED WE HAVE PUBLISHED THIS BOOK. MAY IT SERVE ITS PURPOSE.

  4. Interesting that the Hobby Club was an all-girls situation. I've always thought as "hobby" as sort of a masculine word for that concept.

  5. Love the letterman's sweater on the boy in the quarter on 45.

West Kentucky Genealogy has already expanded this collection of photos. Exciting!

  6. From Picture 48:

"Each Heath supporter can truly say, 'We are proud of our Pirates of 1941-42.'

"After the first few games were lost, including tilts with Barlow, Brookport, Sharpe, Metropolis, and Calvert City, Pirates and fans alike buckled down to hand a string of defeats to their opponents. Among these was our perennial rival, Lone Oak, whose Purple Flash was McCracken County's pride. After bowing to them early in the season on the Lone Oak floor, we were especially determined to 'hand it back' when they met us at home. This the Pirates did to the tune of 34-30----Fifteen rahs for the Pirates. ...

"In truth, the Pirates of 1942 have played a great game and are handing Heath's banner on to future teams, unsullied.

"May future classes, as have those in the past, say 'On Heath Pirates!' with the assurance that Heath's teams have stood and always will stand for the highest type of play."

Per Bob Mays's phenomenal www.kyhssports.freewebspace.com, the 1942 Second District tournament was played at Heath. He doesn't have any results from that tournament, but here's how he has the First Region playing out:

1942 (at Mayfield) (64 districts; district champs & runners-up advanced)

    Paducah 30, Fulton 26 (OT)
    Murray 24, Cuba 21
    New Concord 24, Milburn 19
    Arlington 22, Barlow 21

    Murray 27, Paducah 22
    New Concord 24, Arlington 23

    New Concord 29, Murray 25
