NCAA Women's Golf Update

A disappointing day for Emma Talley and the Crimson Tide.  Miss Talley shot a 77.  She is now 3 over for the tournament, and in a tie for 24th place.  The battle for the individual title is basically down to three players:  Annie Park of USC, who is 9 under; Ally McDonald of Mississippi State, who is 7 under; and Stephanie Meadow of Alabama, who is 7 under.

As for the Alabama team, they shot a 13-over par 301 to fall into a tie for third place with Purdue at UCLA at 9 over par.  Everyone is playing for pride at this point anyway, as USC has a 17-shot lead over the second place team, and a 28-shot lead over the third place teams.  The Women of Troy are 19 under par, while Duke is in second at 2 under.  USC's performance is incredible -- the lowest team score in the history of the NCAA Women's Tournament is 4 under par.  That record will likely be shattered tomorrow.

    2. Now one over through six holes . . . in a tie for 20th.

This is a tough day -- it's very windy out there.

Ally McDonald of Mississippi State, who was 7 under par when play started this morning, is now 1 over with one hole to play.

Annie Park (USC) has started bogey/birdie. She is 9 under through 2 holes, and has a three-shot lead on second-place Stephanie Meadow (Alabama). Meadow is six-under through 6 holes.

  2. Annie Park (USC) has a seven-shot lead after 8 holes. She is 10 under par, with Stephanie Meadow (Alabama) trailing at 4 under.

Emma Talley just birdied the 12th hole. After playing the front nine in one over par, she has now birdied 11 and 12 to move to one under for the day, and two over for the tournament. She is currently tied for 12th, and is playing very well, given the difficult conditions.

  3. Emma Talley was still at even par for the day when she came to the par-3 16th hole, but she made a triple-bogey there. So she is now three-over for the day, and six over for the tournament. She is tied for 25th place.

Annie Park (USC) is going to win the individual medal. After 10 holes, she is 11 under par -- eight shots ahead of Celine Boutier (Duke), who is now in second place.

  4. Emma Talley shoots a three-over par 75. For the week, she goes 71+71+77+75=294, and she finishes six over par. She is in a tie for 23d. She had the second-best score of any Alabama player.

Annie Park (USC) is really putting on a show. With four holes to go, she is four-under for the day, 13-under for the tournament, and she has a 10-shot lead.

With only a few holes left, USC has a 23-shot lead over second-place Duke, and a 42-shot lead over third-place Purdue The folks on NCAA.com said that this was probably the best team performance in the history of the women's NCAA Tournament.

Alabama collapsed on the last day, falling all the way into a tie for 8th. This means, among other things, that they were beaten by Auburn. After the first day, Alabama was 17 shots ahead of Auburn, but after four days, the 38th-seeded Tigers ended up beating the 2d-seeded Tide by six shots.
