Evening Session of the Boys' Basketball Tournament

Sen. Paul is still filibustering, but it's about time for the second double-header of the day in Lexington.  This is the western Kentucky session, featuring teams from the First, Second, and Third Regions.  Here are tonight's match-ups:

Graves Co. Eagles (26-8) v. Ohio Co. Eagles (25-7)
Hopkinsville Tigers (31-4) v. South Oldham Dragons (24-7)

The usually-wonderful KHSAA web page has crashed, so we are flying blind tonight.  But we can still hear the games on WVLK, 590 AM in Lexington, so we will be tuned in.

  1. Graves County High School was formed in 1986. This is their 8th trip to the State Tournament -- they previously appeared in 2009, 2006, 2000, 1998, 1997, 1994, and 1993. Their best run was in 2006, when they reached the semi-finals.

The last time one of the old Graves County high schools made the state tournament was in 1960, when Symsonia won the First Region.

The only team from Graves County ever to win the State Tournament was Cuba, which won it all in 1952.

  2. Ohio County was formed in 1965 as the result of a merger from Hartford, Beaver Dam, Centertown, and Horse Branch.

The OCHS Eagles have previously reached the State Tournament in 1969, 1991 and 2005. The 1969 Eagles reached the Final, but were beaten by Louisville Cental 101-72. (That is the only State title game where the winner scored 100 points).

  3. Hurrah! The KHSAA Web page is working again.

Meanwhile, Graves leads Ohio County 5-2 with 4:55 left in the first.

  4. Graves leads 12-6 with 2:49 left in the first. Unfortunately, they are only 1-5 from the line.

  5. Meanwhile, the Paul filibuster has now been going for seven hours.

  6. Ohio County is playing a zone, and Graves has hit 3-7 three-pointers so far. Graves County leads 20-11 after one quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Now Ohio County is on a 6-0. Graves calls time with 5:54 left in the first half. Graves still leads 20-17.

  8. Graves has calmed down somewhat. There are 2 minutes and 43 seconds left in the first half, and Graves leads 26-21.

  9. At the half, Graves leads Ohio County 30-21. Graves is still struggling at the line, where they have gone 5-12.

  10. By the way, I really hope Eric gets to hear the promo for the Girls' State tournament in Bowling Green. They keep playing this promo in the commercial breaks, and it features the following jingle:

"I can live, I can dream
I can be who I want to be
I can live, I can dream
    I love Bowling Green."

    ReplyDelete
  11. They just played that jingle again.

  12. Meanwhile, Sen. Paul asks for unanimous consent for the Senate to take up a non-binding resolution stating that the U.S. government should not use drones to kill non-combatants on U.S. soil. Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) objects.

    The filibuster continues.

  13. There was a scoring mistake. Graves County actually leads 30-22 at the half.

  14. Both sides are red-hot to start the second half. Graves leads 40-35 early in the 3d quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  15. With 3:52 left in the 3d quarter, Graves leads 44-37.

    ReplyDelete
  16. With 2:55 left in the third, Graves leads 45-37. Graves is only 9-17 from the foul line. But they have matched Ohio County point for point in this quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Graves closes out the third quarter with a nice run. They lead 54-43 with one quarter left.

Graves has made 5-10 three-pointers, while Ohio County has only made 4-14.

  18. Trace Young, an eighth-grader for Ohio County, has nine points in this game. With 6:14 left, however, Graves leads 56-46.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Graves is still looking good. With 2:52 left, they lead Ohio County 65-52.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Meanwhile, Sen. Paul's filibuster has now lasted for eight hours.

  21. Now I can see why the guys on Froggyland kept saying that Calloway had to zone Graves. This Graves County team has a lot more offensive firepower than usual. They are up 69-54 with 1:48 to play.

  22. Ohio County's efforts to pressure Graves have consistently backfired, as Graves just shreds the pressure. Graves County is shooting over 51 percent from the floor. They lead 74-59 with less than a minute to go.

I really want to see what happens if Graves County takes on Hoptown in the next round.

  23. OK, I've switched over to WHOP (1230 AM in Hopkinsville) in anticipation of the Hoptown/South Oldham game.

    ReplyDelete
  24. And that's it! For only the third time in eight appearances, Graves County advances to the quarter-finals of the State Tournament. They take down Ohio County, 74-60.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Now, come on, Hoptown! Let's have a rare First v. Second matchup in the quarter-finals.

    ReplyDelete
  26. South Oldham was founded in 1989, and has never been to the State Tournament before.

Since 1938, this is only Hoptown's sixth trip to the state tournament. The Tigers previously went in 2012, 2003, 1986, 1985, and 1969. They won it all in 1985. It should also be noted that Hopkinsville Crispus Attucks went to the state semi-finals in 1960.

  27. On WHOP, they're using the CBS college basketball music to introduce their pre-game coverage.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I just want to point out that Hopkinsville is wearing uniforms that say "Hoptown." How cool is that?

    ReplyDelete
  29. For reasons that I cannot fathom, South Oldham is trying to press Hopkinsville. This is not working, as the Tigers lead 8-1 with 5:09 left in the first quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Now things are starting to work better for the Dragons. They got a couple of turnovers, and they trail 8-5 with 4:01 left in the first.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Cameron Mills thinks that Hoptown is playing out of control. But the Tigers still lead 8-5 with 3:10 left in the first.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This is great stuff. SOHS gets a steal and a layup to make it 8-7, but then Hoptown hits a 3 to make it 11-7. Time out with 1:55 left in the first.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sen. Paul has now been filibustering for 9 hours.

    ReplyDelete
  34. After one quarter, Hoptown leads 16-7.

  37. Hoptown blew this game open, led 37-15 at the half, and cruised to a 74-52 win. So we will have an all-western Kentucky quarter-final when the Tigers play Graves County on Friday.

Meanwhile, Rand Paul is still filibustering. Go Heath out.

  38. Yeah, but Crestwood is Kentucky's fastest-growing city, so this presumably will not be South Oldham's first and last Sweet Sixteen appearance.

    Plus, Quigs.

  39. I'm totally rooting for Hoptown in this tournament.

    1. Maybe we'll just have to do separate threads tomorrow afternoon, then.

    2. I want to know more about the officiating in the Madisonville/Hoptown game.
