We gave a special dinner to Number1Son at the Cracker Barrel last night, so we missed the State Semi-Finals. We had a great time, but we missed two good games:
Semi-Final One:
Madison Central 60, Hopkinsville 56
This was a real heartbreaker for the Tigers. At the half, they led Madison Central 31-23, and they still were still up 46-40 with only one quarter left. And then here's what happened:
With 6:55 to go, Madison Central made two free throws. 46-42, Hoptown.
With 6:20 to go, Madison Central made two free throws. 47-44, Hoptown.
With 5:37 to go, Madison Central made two free throws. 49-46, Hoptown.
With 5:19 to go, Madison Central made two free throws. 49-48, Hoptown.
With 5:01 to go, Madison Central made one of two free throws. 49-49.
With 4:40 to go, Madison Central made one of two free throws. 50-49, Indians.
But Hopkinsville fought back, and the Tigers led 56-55 with 1:19 to go. And then here's what happened:
With 37 seconds to go, Madison Central made two free throws. 57-56, Indians.
With 15 seconds to go, Hoptown missed a layup.
With 10 seconds to go, Madison Central made a free throw, missed the second, but got the rebound, and made two more free throws to win the game 60-56.
Madison Central outscored Hopkinsville 20-10 in the fourth quarter, and 15 of their 20 points came from free throws. For the game, the Indians were 29-33 from the line, while Hopkinsville made 15-20 free throws. That was the difference. I'm sure the folks in Christian County will have their own theories about this game, and I would find it hard to say them nay.
Semi-Final Two:
Lou. Ballard 59, Montgomery Co. 55
This was also a great game. The Bruins were down 46-45 going into the last quarter, but they
fought back for a victory. The Bruins were led by Kelan Martin, who had 23 points and 14 rebounds.
One of the odd things about the Hoptown game was when the WHOP announcer noted that the kid who hit the free throw that gave Madison Central the lead at 4:40 has grandparents who live in Hoptown. In fact, the kid's grandparents and the announcer's mom live in the same neighborhood, the announcer said.
