The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette News Quiz: Jan. 1, 1968, Edition

Happy new year from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette! Now find a pencil and an opened Christmas-card envelope or whatever ...

OK, I think I've gotten 1, 3, 4 and 5. My favorite question here is 5, of course, as it drums up in my mind's eye a picture of John Stofa's 1968 football card (SPOILER ALERT--do not click on this link until you have your answer for 5). Maybe I'll get out my 1968 football cards later today.

Feeling pretty strong about my performance through Part II. If I've guessed correctly on the Vietnamese NLF back in Part I, I'm scoring 100 percent so far.

But Part III is tough, especially 45 years in the future. I don't even remember even hearing of Nelson, Boumediene or Bailey. This would almost be simpler if you had a multiple choice of titles for each name, given that you could potentially eliminate down to what would've seemed like the most newsworthy role of the moment. Presumably, all five of these titles are newsworthy on Jan. 1, 1968, so this is pretty darned challenging.

We, too, celebrate Three Kings Day at my house, and it's fantastic. Trees are still twinkling around here; some presents remain under the tree to be opened--even on New Year's Day, we remain on our way to Bethlehem.

Answers to the quiz will appear in the comments. You'll need this little chart after you total up your score. Good luck!

  1. "H'mmm," as a contraction? Interesting. I always thought it was just "Hmmm."

  2. Part I answers: 1-c, 2-b, 3-c, 4-b and 5-a.

When you Google "Vietnamese NLF," the first things that pop up are links about Dat Nguyen, the former Dallas Cowboys linebacker who was the first Vietnamese-American to play in the NFL. But, alas, NLF is an acronym for "National Liberation Front." I got lucky and guessed correctly on No. 2, so I'm rocking with a perfect 50 points out of Part I.

  3. Part II: 1-e, 2-d, 3-a, 4-b and 5-c. Part III: 1-c, 2-a, 3-b, 4-d and 5-e.

Well, my luck ran out at the bottom of Part III. After guessing correctly on Papadopolous (the Greek premier), Nelson (-Wisc.) and Boumediene (Algeria prez)--and they were all guesses--I got Bailey (the DNC chair) and Bayard Rustin (the civil-rights leader) crisscrossed.

So, I'm up to 88 of 100 points through Part III, which is pretty much what I scored on every social-studies test at good, ol' West Paducah Heath High and Middle and Paducah Concord Elementary. As Bill Parcells apparently said, you are what your record says you are.

  4. Symbols: 1-i, 2-j, 3-c, 4-a, 5-d, 6-e, 7-f, 8-g, 9-h and 10-b.

I got eight of these, mistakenly hooking up Mao (d) with the Pope and wishing LBJ (f) a happy 74th. So, that's a total of 168 points--"excellent"!
