U.S. Amateur Round of 32

Here are what our three golfers of interest are up to in the round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur golf championship, now being played at Cherry Hills near Denver.

1. Justin Thomas of Goshen, Kentucky, is two up with two holes to play in his match against Max Homa, who plays college golf for the University of California.

2. Patrick Newcomb of Benton -- who played for Marshall County and who now plays for Murray State -- is one down after four holes of his match with Michael Hebert of Alpharetta, Georgia. Hebert plays for Auburn.

3. Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho -- who plays for the University of Washington -- is three up after nine holes of his match with Adam Stephenson of Greenville, North Carolina. Stephenson played for East Carolina.

  1. Justin Thomas wins his match with a score of 3 & 1, and moves into the Round of 16.

Michael Hebert is 1 up on Patrick Newcomb through 8 holes.

Chris Williams is 3 up on Adam Stephenson through 12 holes.

  2. Chris Williams has beaten Adam Stephenson by a score of 5 and 3.

Michael Hebert is 1 up on Patrick Newcomb through 14 holes. That has been a very close match. Hebert won the 3d hole to go one up. Newcomb won the 7th hole to even the match. Hebert won the 8th hole with a birdie to go one up. Then Hebert won the 9th and 11th holes to go 3 up. But then Newcomb won the 12th and 14th holes to cut into Hebert's lead.

  3. Patrick Newcomb won the 15th hole, and the two golfers halved the 16th. With two holes to go, the match is all square.

  4. Newcomb lost the 17th hole with a bogey to fall one behind.

But then Hebert lost the 18th hole with a double-bogey! WE'RE ALL SQUARE AND HEADED TO SUDDEN DEATH!

This is the only match in the Round of 32 that has not yet been concluded.

  5. Patrick Newcomb has done it! The match returned to the 1st hole, where Newcomb made a bogey -- but Hebert made a DOUBLE-BOGEY! Newcomb wins his match 1 up in 19 holes. He's into the Sweet 16.
