One and done: Boys' round of 128

And now here we go with the boys' games (regional tournaments listed in order of how the winners will be bracketed in the 2012 PNC/KHSAA Boys' Sweet Sixteen® State Basketball Tournament):

16th Region, at Morehead State University's Johnson Arena--Rowan County beat Ashland Blazer, 64-58, for the 2011 regional championship and then went on to finish runnerup for the state title. Both teams are back in this year's regional tournament. GoHeath this weekend doped the regionals and said we should expect to see either Rowan or Blazer, who are on opposite sides of the 16th bracket, headed to Lexington for the Sweet Sixteen.

13th Region, at Corbin's The Arena--Bell County beat Corbin, 54-49, in the championship last season. Corbin is back in this year's regional; GoHeath says a game to watch is Thursday's Clay County-Harlan County quarter, and Jay Compton writes in the Middlesboro Daily News that the tournament is wide open.

12th Region, at Pulaski County High School in Somerset--Wayne County beat Somerset Southwestern, 51-35, in the championship last season. Both teams are back in this year's regional. GoHeath also likes East Jessamine, Wayne's quaterfinal foe tomorrow night.

Second Region, at Madisonville-North Hopkins Senior High School--Christian County beat Madisonville-North Hopkins, 76-67, in the championship last season and then went on to win the state title. Both teams are back in this year's regional, but GoHeath is more interested in the potential of Hoptown joining Madisonville-North in the championship. "If those two teams meet again in Madisonville for the regional title, that could be a real thriller." (If it happens, Hoptown better be ready for "Pandemonium," pictured 1962.)

Kevin Patton of The Gleaner looks at a couple of other rivalries.

Sixth Region, at Louisville Atherton High School and Bellarmine University's Knights Hall in Louisville--Bullitt East beat Pleasure Ridge Park, 81-59, in the championship last season. Both teams are back in this year's regional. All four quarters are today, starting in about two hours. GoHeath's analysis suggests the best game figures to be PRP and Jeffersontown, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Central.

Seventh Region, at Bellarmine's Knights Hall--Middletown Eastern beat Jtown, 73-51, in the championship last season. Eastern is back in this year's regional (Jtown now plays in the Sixth). GoHeath acknowledges Trinity's strong season.

Third Region, at Owensboro Sportcenter--Daviess County beat Muhlenberg County, 64-63, in the championship last season. Both teams are back in this year's regional. Muhlenberg has a tough quarterfinals foe tomorrow night, against Grayson, says GoHeath.

10th Region, at Montgomery County High School in Mount Sterling--Winchester George Rogers Clark beat Pendleton County, 62-40, in the championship last season. Both teams are back in this year's regional. GoHeath likes The George to repeat.

Fourth Region, at Western Kentucky University's E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green--Bowling Green Warren Central beat Bowling Green Senior, 68-64, in the championship last season. Both teams are back in this year's regional. "Can the Purples really beat the Dragons in both football and basketball?" asks GoHeath. BUT WAIT! Of Logan County's quarterfinal matchup with the Purples, Paul Halfacre wrote in the Russellville News Democrat Leader, "The Cougars have not played Bowling Green this year but they played one of the statistically harder schedules this season in anticipation and preparation of this particular game."

Eighth Region, at Henry County High School in New Castle--Oldham County beat Spencer County, 70-50, in the championship last season. Oldham County is back in this year's regional and the favorite, GoHeath says.

Ninth Region, at Northern Kentucky University's Bank of Kentucky Center in Highland Heights--Edgewood Dixie Heights beat Newport Central Catholic, 79-76, in four overtime periods, in the championship last season. Both teams are back in this year's regional, but a rematch would have to occur in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, GoHeath is watching Covington Holmes.

14th Region, at Knott County Central High School in Hindman--Perry County Central beat Knott County Central, 45-39, in the championship last season. Knott County Central is back in this year's regional. GoHeath's Cinderella, Buckhorn, opens the quarterfinal round tomorrow night, against Wolfe County.

First Region, at Murray State University's CSFB Center--Marshall County beat Paducah Tilghman, 62-56, in the championship last season. Both teams are back in this year's regional, and GoHeath tells us that the Marshals are again the favorite.

11th Region, at Eastern Kentucky University's Alumni Coliseum in Richmond--Lexington Catholic beat Richmond Madison Central, 59-43, in the championship last season. Both teams are back in this year's regional, and GoHeath likes them both and Scott County, too.

Fifth Region, at Central Hardin High School in Elizabethtown--Bardstown beat Elizabethtown, 62-55, in the championship last season. Bardstown is back in this year's regional, and it should come down to it and Etown John Hardin, says GoHeath. Chuck Jones of The News-Enterprise isn't quite so sure.

15th Region, at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville--Pikeville Shelby Valley beat Pikeville, 49-42, in the championship last season. Pikeville is back in this year's regional, but GoHeath likes Inez Sheldon Clark and Prestonsburg.

Finally, as requested, here are the all-time regional-tournament champs via the KHSAA. Rah!

  6. A year ago, Middletown Eastern ripped through the Seventh Region tournament with victories by 33, 14 and 22 points and eventually made it to the state semifinals before losing to Christian County. Today, the Eagles fell in the first Seventh quarterfinal, 64-61, to Louisville Central.

    1. That's a good example of why the District Finals are so important, even though no one is eliminated.
