Album Review: Soul Time! by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

At a time when so many people are looking back to the 60's R&B sound for inspiration you get Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. These guys aren't trying to take the 60's sound and reinvent it for 2012, they are simply diving into the 60's and staying there.

Because of this it's easy to look at Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings as a throwaway act, but that would be big mistake. Truth is these guys aren't creating good soul laden R&B for 2012, they are producing solid soul laden R&B for anytime.

This album is a collection of songs that never made it onto an album before and it's a solid set of songs. I prefer Jones when she's slowed down and gritty, but this album really shows the power of the Dap-Kings and just how good these guys are.

If you want to hear some really good R&B then give this album a listen.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad. I know two stars seems a bit tough after all the praise, but this album is a bit more upbeat and funky and to my mind not hitting in Jones's sweet spot.

  1. This is a great-sounding song. Everything I've ever heard by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings sounds fantastic.

But, while I hate to be so boring and earnest, that lyric really hacks me off. The better question would be, "What if we all started paying attention?"
