Oh, Kentucky

The Kentucky desk this morning will be taking your questions about Elkton. I have a Christmas luncheon today with some visiting Todd County family, and among the topics I hope to discuss are Hampton's Dairy Mart, James Clark McReynolds and Blue and Gray State Park. The park no longer exists. The WPA guide says you could drive three miles north of Elkton on Ky. 181 and Blue and Gray State Park, established in 1925 and named for its "intermediate position between the birthplaces of Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln." There was a hotel, tennis courts, picnic grounds, etc., and "many sportsmen stay at the hotel during the fall while fox hunting and shooting small game in the surrounding region." It appears as though Ky. 181 might still be known as "Blue and Gray Park Road."

Gov. Beshear's top candidates for Kentuckian of the Year would seem to be Dakota Meyer and Nikki Finney.

Into the top 25!

Good jobs news from Paris and Hoptown, bad from Fulton.

Made In U.S.A. (Leitchfield specifically): Laughing Cow cheese, which is in heavy rotation at our house.

And perhaps in Louisville, reportedly: a Doritos-flavored taco shell.

Disbanding Paducah's "tent city."

Bonuses and time off for Corbin's city workers.

Everybody loves Murray.

Kentucky made the Los Angeles Times, and the story is not about the church that banned and then stopped banning interracial couples.

Christmas parading in Columbia.

  1. Well, heck, everybody mostly just wanted to talk about how various members of the family were doing, so it wasn't exactly the Todd County Cavalcade I was hoping for. Nonetheless, I did learn that the Hampton Dairy Mart has employed virtually the same staff since my relatives arrived in Elkton in 1970 and that it continues to thrive (especially for lunch) in spite of the presence of a Dairy Queen just down U.S. 68/Ky. 80. My family likes the barbecue, particularly.
