Philadelphia v. St. Louis

Well, this series is looking more and more like the Detroit/New York series. The Phillies are clearly the best team in the National League -- they are probably the best NL team since the great Braves teams of the early to mid-1990s. But they just cannot score against a very good Cardinals pitching staff. Tonight, the Cardinals got a run off of Roy Halladay in the top of the first, and Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter has made that run stand up through six innings. As we head into the bottom of the 7th, Carpenter has thrown only 75 pitches and allowed only 3 hits. The Cardinals lead 1-0, and Fangraphs gives St. Louis a 67 percent chance of victory.

  1. Ryan Howard, who has been almost completely useless in this series, swings wildly at a 3-0 pitch and flies out to right. One out in the 7th.

  2. The Phillies scored two runs in the top of the 4th in game 4. Since then, they have scored 1 run in 14 innings.

But they have hit a lot of deep fly balls, so there you go.

  3. Unless something happens to Carpenter, this game is over. He is just toying with the Phillies. After retiring Howard, he gets Shane Victorino to ground out to first and retires Raul Ibanez on a grounder to second.

The Phillies only have six outs left, and they have the bottom of the order coming up in the 8th.

  4. If the Phillies could ever score, what happened in the top of the 8th might be important. The Cards loaded the bases with one out, but Roy Halliday (who has now thrown 126 pitches!) worked his way completely out of the jam. The Cards still lead by only one run, 1-0.

  5. In the bottom of the 8th, Carpenter actually retired four Phillies. The third Philly batter struck out, but the catcher dropped the third strike and allowed the runner to reach first. This brought up Jimmy Rollins, the Philly lead-off hitter, with the lead run. But Carpenter, undaunted, simply got Rollins to ground out to second.

  6. Well, that's all she wrote. Carpenter retires the Phillies 1-2-3 in the 9th, and the Cardinals have a surprisingly easy 1-0 victory.

  7. WOW! That is a heck of a pitching performance. Very happy for all of the Cardinal fans in the 270.
