Oh, Kentucky

The girls are golfing at Bowling Green Country Club today in the first round of the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA Girls State Golf tournament, and so the Kentucky desk pauses to recognize some of the state's greats of the sport. The Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame includes eight women among its inductees:

-- Myra VanHoose Blackwelder, four-time KHSAA champion (1970-73) with Lexington Lafayette High School, the first female athlete to be awarded a full athletic scholarship to the University of Kentucky and 1980 LPGA rookie of the year;

-- Anne Combs, a Lexingtonian and five-time winner of the Women's State Amateur tournament, most recently in 1983;

-- Mary Lou Daniel Crocker, a Louisville native, 1962 U.S. Girls' Junior Championship in 1962 and the first and only woman to earn a letter in a men's varsity sport at the UK;

-- Bettie Lou Evans, a Mount Sterling native, UK's women's golf coach 1980-2011 and the school's current director of golf operations;

-- Marion Miley, "the only fine player in the insular world of golf to be murdered in her prime;"

-- Betty Rowland Probasco, an Irvine native, four-time State Am champ, 1950 National Intercollegiate Championship winner and 1955 Women’s Southern Golf Association Championship winner, and

-- Louise Wilson, a Goshen native whose successes spanned decades, such as six State Am titles captured from 1958 through '85.

Caldwell County High senior Emma Talley is shooting for her third-straight state title. Miss Talley tees off at 1:09 Central today.

  1. Megan Wilshire of Scott County is 1-under with six holes recorded, and Abbi Stamper of Franklin County is even after nine. Everyone else who has played at least three holes is at least three strokes over par. Heath's Sydney Trimple is 10-over with 15 holes in the books.

  2. Franklin County's Stamper and Scott County's Wilshire are both 3-over with 15 holes recorded. That puts them in a six-way tie for sixth, but none of the five golfers in front of them or the other four who also are at 3-over have completed more than three holes. Kennedi Dermon of Owen County is tops of that lot, at even through three.

  3. That story about Marion Miley was just unbelievably sad.

  4. Miss Talley is actually going for her third title in four years; she won the 2009 tournament by six shots, but was disqualified after she reported a mistake on her scorecard.

  5. I had never heard of any of those Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame women, and I thought all of them had really, really interesting stories. But, of course, the one about Marion Miley was just brutal.

  6. Mr. Dalton used to hang out at that country club, I wonder if he and Mrs. Dalton knew her?

  7. Franklin County's Stamper and Scott County's Wilshire are leaders in the clubhouse at 4-over, and Owen County's Dermon remains atop the leaderboard at even through three holes.

    Heath's Trimble finished at 12-over today, and that puts her in a tie for 59th at the moment.

  8. And here we go ... Caldwell County's Emma Talley and North Hardin's Lydia Gumm are both at 1-under after three holes, and their third playing partner, Lone Oak's Anna Hack, is 1-over. Gumm and Talley are now our tournament's leaders.

  9. This is great ... six holes played now for Radcliff North Hardin's Gumm and Caldwell County's Talley, and now they're both 2-under. Jill Edginton of Park Hills Notre Dame Academy is even, also through six holes. And Lone Oak's Hack is one of five golfers at 1-over.
