Emma Talley Loses at the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship

Miss Emma Talley of Caldwell County had a pretty good week at the U.S. Girls' Junior Golf Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club near Chicago. In two rounds of stroke play, she shot 75+71=146 for a two over par score that left her in a tie for fourth and meant that she easily qualified for match play. In the round of 64, she enjoyed an easy win over Andrea Unson of the Philippines, beating her 5 and 3.

But today, in the round of 32, she had a tough match against Dottie Ardina of the Philippines. Talley went out in 35, one under par. She had two birdies and only one bogey on the front tine. But Ardina matched her, and the girls were all square. Moving to the back nine, Talley parred holes 10-16, which is normally excellent golf in a U.S.G.A event. But Ardina took one birdie, one bogey, and five pars over the same stretch. So the golfers were still all square with only two holes left. On the 417-yard par 4 17th, Talley took her first bogey since the second hole, while Ardina made par to go 1 up with one hole left. Talley parred the last hole, a 476-yard par 5. But Ardina birdied it to win the match two up.

In stroke play terms, Talley shot an even-par 72, which is excellent. But Ardina was even better, shooting a two-under 70. Such are the breaks of match play.

Talley will be a senior in high school this year. We hope she gets to some Caldwell County football games before she heads off to Tuscaloosa to play college golf for Alabama.
