Best of the 90's: All Eyez On Me by Tupac Shakur

All Eyez On Me [Explicit]
Tupac is such a weird story.  He built his fame by being one of the bad boys of rap and he died being one of the bad boys of rap.  Thing is he didn't run in to any legal problems until he found fame.  He put out All Eyez On Me after finishing a stint in prison.  It immediately jumped to number one.  The big stunner here is that this is a double album, a first in rap.

The album has a nice groove that runs throughout, but that same groove also seems to make this 27 track album very long.  At times I found myself not even realizing as we moved from one track to the next.  Also, I"m not all that crazy about the lyrical content.

Currently this album sits at number 81 on the Best of the 90's list.  Like it or not this was a very important album in rap history and for that alone you should give it a listen if you have any interest in hip-hop.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.

  1. Matthew, putting the legend aside, how would was Tupac as a rapper? Was he as good at rap as Kurt Cobain was at rock?

  2. that Tupac Shakur/Janet Jackson movie was pretty good--and great at moments. when they pull off the ups truck from the interstate between los angeles and san francisco and happen upon the picnic, i thought it was going to end up being my favorite movie of all time.

  3. Not sure who I would compare him to in rock. He had back to back number 1 albums, not just on the R&B charts, but number 1 overall, and this in 1995 and 1996 when CD sales were king, and one of those was a double album. Unlike Cobain he wasn't the figure head of genre, he was simply very popular, so maybe more liking to Pearl Jam.
