Album Review: Blood Pressures by The Kills

Blood PressuresIf you were to single out Allison Mosshart's guitar work on this album you would expect a heavy, noisy album, but with Jamie Hince's beats and Mosshart's vocals a freshness and clarity is added to the mix that creates a very interesting sound.

The songs here are focused and very well crafted to create a big sound with just two instruments and I enjoyed listening to this album.  The problem is there is nothing here that really grabs you.  Besides the opening track there really isn't what I would call a single on here and so as you listen you can find yourself getting a bit lost with nothing to direct you.

Still it's a pretty good album and something that would be fun to play on your first day trip of the season to the beach.  Going down the up tempo beats and Mosshart's singing would drive you toward a fun sunny day.  On the drive home in the dark, with everyone exhausted the thick guitar sounds of Mosshart would act as a nice blanket for those wanting to sleep and for the driver provide good soft music to reflect on a wonderful day.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good.

  1. See. This is why your opinions on records are useful and mine aren't. From the second this song started playing, it reminded me of one of those records of spooky, ghost songs that were available around Halloween when we were kids. Now, that's not the Kills' fault at all, and it probably wouldn't have anything to do with anyone else's experience of listening to this record. And yet, because I'm not a fan of Halloween, it would just color anything I would say about the record. You, on the other hand, are a person who is able to do things like suspend your own self in order to play long, intense games of car color in which the colors themselves compete (Blue v. Red, etc.) For me to enjoy that sort of thing, I have to secretly assign Blue to me and then Red to Bobby Knight or Sen. McConnell or Chris Webber or Britney Spears or somebody--and, furthermore, cheat to ensure that Blue and I win.
