Best of the 70's: L.A. Woman by The Doors

L.A. Woman [40th Anniversary Mixes]It seems odd to me that a Doors album would make the Best of the 70's list as I think of them as a 60's band, but currently L.A. Woman sits at number 60 on the Best of the 70's list.

After their brilliant first album The Doors wandered from album to album not putting together another fully realized album until 1971 with L.A. Woman which would be their last with Jim Morrison.  On L.A. Woman they went back to their blues roots for inspiration and put together a full collection of songs that blend perfectly together from front to end. With "Love Her Madly" they managed another brilliantly simple pop tune and with the closing "Riders on the Storm" they created their best song.  It manages to fully integrate everything that worked well about The Doors music.

Funny thing is I still think of this as a 1960's album and so it is hard in some ways to think of how this fits into the world of 1971.  The album has held up extremely well and can really fit with any mood or situation.  It is a great driving album, especially on back roads, early morning alone.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good.

  1. Around 1966 or 1967, one of my good friends was in New York on a date with a guy who took her to see the Doors. They were playing at a club, and they did two shows with an intermission in between. My friend, who had never heard of them, insisted on leaving at the intermission.

That relationship did not work out.

  2. That's a great story.

I'll bet Rob and I saw Oliver Stone's Doors movie 20 times at the $1-a-show theater in Bowling Green. No kidding.
