Album Review: Smoke Ring Fo My Halo by Kurt Vile

Smoke Ring For My Halo (Amazon Exclusive Version)With the opening track I'm thinking, "I can dig this."  By track four I'm thinking, "This is an OK sort of groove he's got going on here."  By track five I'm done with it.

Vile is borrowing heavily from all over the place to craft this album which is really as much about mood, like Nick Drake, as anything else.  The problem is somewhere along the line you get bogged down in the music which feels so reused by track five that it just wears you down.

It's not a bad album, but it comes across feeling a bit pretentious and over thought.  It's funny it's as if Vile what's you to think he's put no thought into it, but it feels just the opposite.

If you want some mellow music on while you prepare your taxes then give this a try.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.
