Album Review: Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will by Mogwai

Hardcore Will Never Die, But You WillNot sure I understand what the label post-rock means, but that's the genre this band falls into.  This is instrumental rock that is full of textures or sound revolving mostly around guitar and keyboard.  I'm not the biggest instrumental rock fan, but this stuff actually works pretty well and isn't a bad album.  I have to say I'm surprised how much I enjoyed having it on.

The problem is it creates a bit of a dark mood and so it's hard to say when this would work.  It would be good background music while driving at night through Perryville, KY for instance after you've just been dumped by some girl.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.

  1. I made it through 1:48 of this track. I'm too old to feel this dark.

  2. I really like the phrase "Hardcore will never die, but you will."

  3. I once drove a buddy of mine overnight from Bowling Green to Chicago to be at some federal office when it opened at 8 because he had to get his passport fixed before he was scheduled to leave for Spain the next day. (It all worked out, by the way; the dude went to Spain, brought back a great girl whom he married, and they now have a couple of kids and teach somewhere ... Indiana, maybe.) Anyway, I didn't find this song to be at all dark; it felt like an appropriate soundtrack to walking around Chicago in cut-off shorts and a baseball cap on no sleep that morning, watching the righteous scene of all of those folks headed to their places of business.
