Album Review: Down There by Avey Tare

Down ThereOK here's my take on this album and it's pretty simple.  If you like Animal Collective, then you'll probably like this album.  Avey Tare doesn't venture far, if at all, from his bands sound.  This album is a bit slower, a bit darker, and certainly not as accessible as the Collective's last album Merriweather Post Pavilion, but the formula is there.

I'm happy that the Collective is moving more toward the mainstream with their sound, but all in all I'm not a big Collective fan.  It's a bit too experimental for me and oddly a bit cold to me in its presentation.  Tare is definitely working here to strip away the cold feel that sometimes comes with a Collective song, but I don't think he succeeds.

I could see throwing this album on as background music while you solo through some Extra Innings games late at night while your family is out of town.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.

  1. I did like this example. I also liked the use of "solo" as a verb.
