Album Review: The Band Perry by The Band Perry

The Band Perry [+digital booklet]I really know nothing about the country music world, but as an outsider I am amazed at how influential The Dixie Chicks are.  To my mind that's who this band makes me think of, and definitely the singer, Kimberly Perry, is drawing inspiration from Natalie Maines.

The Band Perry is a family trio that have been performing as a group for about five years.  Garth Brooks discovered them and signed them, very quickly getting them in the studio.

The biggest problem with the album is that it sounds so generic.  You could have put Kimberly in front of a group of studio musicians and gotten the same results.  The brothers being in the mix add nothing special to the sound.  Now the group did write most of the songs on the album and maybe it's the brothers that are the brains behind the pop melodies, but if not then I wonder how long they will remain a trio.

Like I said it's a bit generic, but in a good way.  The songs are consistent and Kimberly has a good voice.  She has a lot of room to grow as does the sound of the trio.  If Nashville allows the trio to explore their musicianship as Kimberly grows as a singer then they have the potential to produce some high quality country music.  If they continue to follow this formula then they should be a successful country group, but not necessarily cutting edge.

I could see playing this while cleaning the house or taking a trip to visit family.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.

  1. Wonder if you would put this one on a run mix?

  2. The Dixie Chicks are the best country band of the last 20 years. Before they got into their spat with Bush, they were the biggest thing going. It's not surprising that everyone wants to imitate them.

  4. I was intrigued by this review, so I listened to a couple of their songs. This girl is OK, but she is no Natalie Maines. Believe me, if Natalie Maines were to sing "If I Die Young," it wouldn't sound generic.

Because Natalie Maines is pretty much nuts, no one is ever going to give her the credit she deserves. But she is simply an unworldly talent.

  5. On the other hand, this girl is a lot prettier than Natalie Maines. But, of course, that simply makes her seem more generic.

  6. I agree she's not Natalie Maines, but I think some of that has to do with maturity. We'll have to see how she develops as a singer.

  7. I could see throwing some stuff off of this album onto a run mix. There are no dance beats here, but the songs are simple and fun and sometimes that's enough to get you going down the street.
