College Baseball Update

There was no late drama last night.  USC pasted A & M 7-1, while Auburn buried Richie Cunningham's old school 8-3.  So the Super Regionals look like this (home team listed first):

BRACKET ONE:
(16) W. Virginia v. Cal Poly
Troy v. Ark-Little Rock
(5) N. Carolina v. So. California
(4) Auburn v. Mississippi

BRACKET TWO:
(15) Kansas v. Oklahoma
(7) Alabama v. St. John's
(6) Texas v. (11) Oregon
(3) Georgia v. (14) Mississippi St.

We have two all-SEC matchups and an all-Big 8 matchup.  We also get to watch at least two games in Troy, Alabama and two more in Morgantown, West Virginia.  I'm really looking forward to this.

  1. The Super Regionals have begun on a beautiful sun-splashed day in Morgantown. In the bottom of the First, WVU blasts a 3-run homer to left center, and the Mountaineers take an early 3-0 lead over the Cal Poly Mustangs. Blood, as they say, runs coal.

  2. West Virginia has never looked prettier than it looks today. The WVU baseball field sits in a little valley (of course) and there is an enormous crowd that has filled up the stands and has folks standing all around the park. The whole place is bright and sunny, and you can see the mountains out beyond the outfield.

Every time I go to West Virginia, it rains.

  3. WVU blew this game open with five runs in the bottom of the 4th, and they are cruising -- up 8-1 after 6.

  4. WVU cruises, 12-2, and the Eers are only one game from Omaha. Now we go to Chapel Hill, where we have another spectacular day of sunshine and two great programs: North Carolina and Southern California. This series will feature the best uniform pairings of the tournament.

  5. Now that UK has decided to quit competing in virtually all sports, I've decided to dial back my hatred of UNC. I've mostly forgiven the Yankees and Notre Dame -- maybe it's time to do the same with the Heels.

  6. In fact, as I look back on my life, the teams that I hated the most -- the Yankees, Notre Dame, UNC, Duke, even Mayfield -- all taught me great life lessons about resilience, patience, determination, and excellence. We were brought up to focus on passion and talent. But those are not the only ways to win.

  7. Anyway, it's a beautiful day in Chapel Hill, both USC and UNC are wearing great uniforms, there's a huge crowd at the game, and once again we see that the NCAA baseball tournament is a great way to end the Sports Year.

  8. UNC leads 3-1 in the bottom of the third.

  9. UNC led 5-1 after 5, but the Trojans just took a 6-5 lead with two out in the top of the 6th.

  10. Trojans took the lead on a two-out grand slam. USC leads 6-5 going into the bottom of the 6th.

  11. There are three NCAA D-1 teams known as the "Trojans." They are USC, Ark-Little Rock, and Troy. All three teams are playing in the Super Regionals right now. USC leads UNC 8-5 in the top of the 7th, and Ark-Little Rock leads Troy 1-0 after 2.

  12. As you can imagine, there is an enormous crowd in Troy -- which makes sense, given that schools like Troy almost never host Super Regionals.

  13. Southern Cal beats UNC 9-5 to take the first game of that Super Regional. Meanwhile, Troy leads Ark-Little Rock 6-2 after 3.
