But Beard didn't play well enough to feature prominently in the book. The main character ends up being Bert Yancey, and I will always wonder how much Schaap really knew about Yancey's backstory.GoHeathhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11122010542579322600noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1697242053625998558.post-44671674170544990472020-09-14T18:33:25.775-04:002020-09-14T18:33:25.775-04:00On Aug. 2, 1969 (my first birthday!), Frank Beard ...On Aug. 2, 1969 (my first birthday!), Frank Beard writes on Page 305, "Some friends of mine took me to see Oh! Calcutta! tonight. I'd never been to the theater in New York before--I think the only show I'd ever seen was Brigadoon in Dallas--but I'll you, if Oh! Calcutta! is typical, I haven't been missing a thing. You sure don't come out humming the tunes. The whole cast ran around nude, and the show was miserable. It wasn't sexy. It wasn't funny. It wasn't even interesting. It was so dull that, even with all those naked people strutting around, my mind kept drifting back to golf."

He was in New York for the Westchester Open. Frank Beard won that tournament and finished as the top money winner on the PGA Tour in 1969. I wonder if he won HP Kentuckian of the Year.

The husband from Maude, Bill Macy, was in the cast when Oh! It's Frank Beard's journal of his 1969 season on (and around) the PGA Tour, as edited by Dick Schaap. This book got Beard in some hot water, apparently, because he was vaguely critical of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and a few other big names. I thought it was all pretty tame--he talked about how those guys were not quite as cozy with the rest of the guys on the tour, but he definitely also talked about how he respected the different position their fame put them in. And though he noted when those guys weren't playing well (and even wondered if Palmer was finished as a serious contender for ), he also poked fun at himself when at the end of the season Nicklaus and Palmer were both playing well. I would argue that probably the dude Beard was hardest on was Bruce Crampton.

But, anyway, what I wanted to talk about was Shell's Wonderful World of Golf. In March 1969, Beard finished T43 at the Doral Open. "All around the course today, people were walking up to me and congratulating me," he writes on Page 122. "The final round of Shell's Wonderful World of Golf was shown on television this week, and I won the championship. I won three straight matches, beating Palmer, Boros, everybody. Everybody was slapping me on the back today like I was a real hot golfer. Those matches were filmed last year."Erichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11218278987255792995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1697242053625998558.post-72975010334049454492016-03-04T10:00:17.092-05:002016-03-04T10:00:17.092-05:00CBS cut down the My Three Sons videos on YouTube!CBS cut down the My Three Sons videos on YouTube!Erichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11218278987255792995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1697242053625998558.post-72458953906588566472016-02-28T18:10:20.269-05:002016-02-28T18:10:20.269-05:00Fair enough.
