The Greatest Football Coach in the History of the South

Here are the records of two Alabama coaches.  It's close, but there's a clear difference:

2007-2023:  Nick Saban:  Overall record 206-29 (.877)  Conference record 120-18 (.870).  Six AP national titles (2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2020).

1958-1982:  Bear Bryant:  Overall record 205-42-9 (.818)  Conference record 125-25-5 (.823).  Five AP national titles (1961, 1964, 1965, 1978, 1979)

The Alabama folks are going to miss Nick Saban a lot.

  1. No other coach has more than four AP national titles.

  8. My classic conferences do not represent a particular year or even a particular era. In each case, they represent my personal favorite lineup for that particular conference.

  9. Here's my Classic OVC based on your personal-favorite-lineup scheme (applied to me this morning):

    Western Kentucky
    Austin Peay State
    Eastern Kentucky
    Evansville
    Louisville
    Middle Tennessee State
    Murray State Teachers College
    Morehead State
Southern Illinois (never in the OVC but seems like it should've been some time)
    Southern Indiana
    Southeast Missouri State
    Tennessee-Martin
    Tennessee State
    Tennessee Tech

Few of these schools play the highest-level football, and some play none at all, and I don't want to look up all of the records, anyway. But No. 1 WKU is 2-1; No. 26 Louisville is 2-0, and No. 130 Middle Tennessee State, 1-2. Murray State, which in real life plays in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, is 0-3.

  10. I just realized that I got Morehead State out of order in my alphabetizing, but I'm not going back and correcting it because I have real mixed emotions about Morehead State (and Eastern to some degree) ever being part of the OVC.

  11. They should just be thankful that I included them at all.

  12. I do keep a Classic OVC for purposes of basketball season. Here's how it ended last season (based on Ken Pom rankings):

    119. Middle Tennessee St: 22-11
    142. Murray St: 16-17
    159. W. Kentucky: 17-15
    182. E. Kentucky: 18-14
    274. Austin Peay: 14-19
    304. Tennessee Tech: 15-17
    327. Morehead St: 15-17

  13. Since Tulane has now moved to the Classic SEC, the old Metro Seven is no longer viable for basketball season. So I am going to use a Classic Missouri Valley from the late 1960's for basketball. Last year, it finished like this (with Ken Pom):

    23. Louisville: 27-7
    51. Memphis St: 29-5
    55. Cincinnati: 18-15
    58. Drake: 30-3
    72. N. Texas: 24-8
    95. Bradley: 26-8
    106. Saint Louis: 19-14
    134. Wichita St: 19-14
    268. Tulsa: 13-20

  14. For the record, when the NCAA Tournament started last season, the Classic SEC looked like this:

    2. Florida: 30-4
    4. Auburn: 28-5
    5. Tennessee: 27-7
    6. Alabama: 25-8
    16. Kentucky: 22-11
    26. Mississippi: 22-11
    32. Mississippi St: 21-12
    34. Georgia: 20-12
    49. Vanderbilt: 20-12
    88. Louisiana St: 14-18
    94. Georgia Tech: 17-16
    138. Tulane: 19-14
