High School Football Quarterfinals

ObviouSo after two weeks to eliminate a bunch of teams that never should have been in the playoffs, the real contenders started playing each other for real, and there were some big games (home teams listed first):

Class 1A:
Kentucky County Day 14 - 35 Mayfield
Beechwood 35 - 13 Frankfort
Hazard 7 - 0 Williamsburg
Pikeville 14 - 36 Fairview

This sets up the usual match-up between Mayfield and Beechwood -- with the Cardinals taking the long trip up to Northern Kentucky.  Here are your semifinals:

Beechwood (9-4) v. Mayfield (12-1)
Fairview (13-0) v. Hazard (9-3)

Class 2A:
Caldwell Co. 10 - 7 Murray
Glasgow 2 - 10 Lou. DeSales
Newport Cent. Catholic 49 - 14 Walton-Verona
Somerset 31 - 7 Danville

Class 2A usually features strong Catholic schools, and this year we have two in the semi-finals.  Caldwell County will have its work cut out for it, as the Tigers make the trek to Louisville:

Lou. DeSales (9-4) v. Caldwell Co. (10-3)
Somerset (11-2) v. Newport Cent. Catholic (9-4)

Class 3A:
Monroe Co. 20 - 10 S. Warren
Bell Co. 10 - 14 Lou. Central
Mason Co. 13 - 55 Bourbon Co.
Belfry 41 - 20 Breathitt Co.

Pity the folks in Bell County, whose team was beaten by Central in last year's playoffs, who waited a whole year for revenge, who got to play Central at home, and who lost.  Central appears to be on its way to another title.

Lou. Central (11-2) v. Monroe Co. (12-1)
Belfry (11-2) v. Bourbon Co. (13-0)

Class 4A:
Warren East 14 - 7 Owensboro
Lou. Western 20 - 36 Collins
Lexington Catholic 27 - 16 Boyle Co.
Ft. Thomas Highlands 28 - 13 Cov. Catholic

Eric's guys at Warren East are still alive, but Highlands appears to be cruising.

Collins (10-3) v. Warren East (13-0)
Ft. Thomas Highlands (12-1) v. Lex. Catholic (11-2)

Class 5A:
Bowling Green 35 - 21 Warren Cent.
John Hardin 47 - 0 Jeffersontown
Franklin Co. 27 - 40 Cooper
Harlan Co. 46 - 12 Pulaski Co.

Congrats to BGHS, which beats Warren Central for the fourth time in two years.  Now they go to play John Hardin, who has outscored their opponents 565-141.

John Hardin (13-0) v. Bowling Green (13-0)
Harlan Co. (11-2) v. Cooper (12-1)

Class 6A:
Lou. Ballard 23 - 42 Lou. Eastern
Lou. Pleasure Ridge Park 28 - 21 Lou. Butler
Scott Co. 47 - 9 Simon Kenton
Lou. Trinity 15 - 14 Lou. St. Xavier (at Cardinal Stadium)

Obviously, the big story here was Trinity's close shave with St. X in a game that shouldn't have been played until the final.  This was probably the Game of the Year in Kentucky, featuring a Trinity team regarded as one of the best in Commonwealth history and a St. X team playing its final game for a legendary coach.  In 31 years at St. X, Mike Glaser had a record of 336-78 and seven state championships, and his Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.  But Charles Walker, who had rushed for St. X's two touchdowns, suffered an ankle injury, and the Tigers did not score again.  Trinity came back with two touchdowns, no extra points, and a field goal to pull out the victory.  It's absurd that Trinity has to play two more games after beating St. X.

Lou. Pleasure Ridge Park (13-0) v. Lou. Eastern (11-2)
Lou. Trinity (11-1) v. Scott Co. (12-1)

    1. It should be noted, however, that JFrakes is an old Bowling Green High Purple, and that might be influencing his opinion of the Raiders. Here's a snippet from a Nov. 3, 1985, letter I received from another Bowling Green High Purple (not Jason Frakes!): "Homecoming was 2 nights ago. I didn't go because I had the SAT the next day. We got beat by--gasp!--Warren East 6-0. Purple City has faced the ultimate humiliation!"
