That's 68-67-68 and 13-under for the tournament, and the Clay County High Tiger wins going away. Twice-defending-champion Newcomb of Benton closes 7-under, for second place, it appears.Erichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11218278987255792995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1697242053625998558.post-68623438551196119572013-06-20T12:43:52.839-04:002013-06-20T12:43:52.839-04:00The Kentucky desk apologizes for failing so far to...The Kentucky desk apologizes for failing so far to note the Kentucky State Amateur Championship men's golf tournament that is finishing up today at Bowling Green Country Club.

"The Kentucky State Amateur Championship has been conducted annually since 1911 and has crowned many of the Commonwealth’s legendary golfers," reads the Kentucky Golf Association media guide. "Names such as Gay Brewer, Jr., Bobby Nicholas, Frank Beard, John Owens, Bill Musselman, Jodie Mudd and J.B. Holmes are now engraved on the championship trophy."

Each of the last two years, the name engraved on the trophy has been that of Patrick Newcomb of Benton and Murray State, but, unless "P-Nuke" or someone else blows up this afternoon, the 2013 champ is going to be Tyler McDaniel of Manchester. As of about half an hour ago, young Tyler had expanded his three-stroke lead through two rounds to six strokes in the in-progress third and final round (picture-of-a-scoreboard alert!).

The rising junior at Clay County High School in October tied for fifth in the KHSAA state golf tournament. Then, in March, he helped the Tigers to a 13th Region boys' basketball championship (his 21 points--McDaniel attempted 17 (!) three-pointers--and nine rebounds were in vain as Clay lost to Knott County Central in the first round of the Sweet Sixteen.)

McDaniel was just two strokes behind Newcomb after two rounds of the 2012 #KyStateAm but then carded a 75 in the final round and finished tied for third. In the 2012 Junior PGA Championship, McDaniel led after two rounds but finished eighth.

A final-round falter does not appear to be in the cards today, however. In the course of my typing this comment, McDaniel of Manchester has reportedly added another stroke between himself and the field.

Justin Sokeland @golfguru55
Tyler McDaniel, not yet a high school junior, birdies 3 of first 4 holes and has 7 shot lead in Ky state amateur
10:59 AM - 20 Jun 13 Erichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11218278987255792995noreply@blogger.com
